INTUITION, LIGHTING AND THE ART OF SELF-EXPRESSION

WINDSOR DALTON, founder of Windsor Dalton Designs, brings a refined approach shaped by a North Carolina upbringing in the furniture capital of the world and enriched by years in Boston and Los Angeles.

Blending traditional forms with modern lines and deep, earthy tones, Dalton has developed a signature style defined by layered textures, sculptural elements, and a balance of elegance and comfort. From curating Parisian antiques to designing bespoke interiors, Windsor Dalton Designs creates spaces that are timeless, tactile, and deeply personal.

“When you run your own business, there are no limits—but that freedom only matters if you’re intentional about the future you’re building.”

Q&A

What role does lighting play in shaping your spaces?

Lighting is usually one of the first things I select in a project because I see it as both sculptural and architectural. It’s not just a finishing touch; lighting's built into the bones of a room, whether it’s hanging overhead or mounted on the walls. I treat it like art. The right fixture can completely change the mood, the atmosphere, and the overall aesthetic of a space. Lighting's as essential to me as any other architectural detail. It has to be both beautiful and functional, and when done well, it enhances not only how a space looks but also how it feels and functions. My goal is for clients to come home, flip the switch, and just enjoy how their lighting transforms the space.

The quality is exceptional, but it’s also offered at a price point that’s accessible to more of my clients, not just ultra-high-end projects. Every time I bring a Regina Andrew piece into a home, I can see how it sparks excitement. Clients immediately respond to how unique and inspiring their designs are.

What is the biggest aha moment you’ve had since owning/running your own business?

One of my biggest aha moments was realizing that when you run your own business, there are no limits. You truly can do whatever you want, but that freedom comes with the responsibility of being strategic. It’s easy to get lost in the day-today tasks, but I’ve learned to step back and look at the bigger picture.

I ask myself: is this moving me toward the kind of life and business I want to build? That mindset shift, focusing less on just checking off tasks and more on intentionally shaping the future, was a real turning point for me.

How do you spark self-expression in your projects?

For me, self-expression often comes from trusting my gut. Sometimes I’ll just know instantly, this is the material, this is the layout, this is the piece, and I’ve learned to listen to that instinct. Following those impulses is what allows me to infuse a bit of myself into each project. It’s not always easy to trust that voice, but when I do, it usually leads to the most authentic and expressive results.
