How to Properly Place Wall Sconces
A Room-by-Room Guide
Lighting shapes a room, whether you’re highlighting areas you love or creating practical illumination for tasks like cooking or reading. Yet achieving the perfect lighting layout can feel elusive. Where should you place a sconce in the bedroom? Is this the right type of light for the space? The questions are endless.
While there are no strict rules for placing wall sconces, there are helpful guidelines to make lighting your home easier, and we’re here to share them.
The bedroom is the perfect place for sconces, especially plug-in styles. They let you turn the light on or off from bed, saving you from fumbling in the dark or disturbing your partner during late-night reading. Plus, they free up valuable space on your nightstand that a table lamp would otherwise occupy.
Bedroom Sconce Height and Spacing (Either Side of the Bed)
Placing sconces on either side of the bed enhances both ambiance and functionality.
Ideally, position them 60 to 66 inches from the floor to the center of the sconce, adjusting as needed based on bed height.
The goal is to keep the light at or slightly above eye level when sitting up in bed. Place sconces 6 to 12 inches from the edge of the bed so they’re easy to reach without feeling obtrusive. If you have nightstands, center the sconces above them for a balanced, cohesive look.

Bathroom Vanity: Sconces on Either Side of the Mirror
If you have the room, placing sconces on both sides of your vanity mirror is ideal. This not only frames the mirror beautifully but also provides direct, even lighting for tasks like applying makeup.
Mount the sconces 60 to 66 inches from the floor, and position them 2 to 6 inches from the edge of the mirror. For smaller bathrooms, 2-3 inches works well, while 4-6 inches creates a more spacious, traditional look.

Kitchen: Sconces Above the Counter
Installing task sconces above your kitchen counter is a great way to make cooking easier and more enjoyable, while adding style to your kitchen. Sconces should be hung at a minimum of 24 inches above the countertop or around 60-65 inches from the floor, depending on sconce style. The goal is to keep them just above eye level to reduce glare but not so high that it loses its functionality.
Space them at least 24-36 inches apart for balanced coverage, and be sure to center them based on key features your kitchen instead of scattering them randomly.

Over a Mirror or Picture Frame
If you don’t have the space on each side of a piece, or prefer the look of a sconce above a mirror or picture frame, the fixture should be positioned in the center of the mirror, and 2-5 inches above the top edge of the mirror.
To keep the fixture looking proportional to your mirror, it should be at least half the width of the mirror, but not wider than the mirror itself. Picture lights are the perfect choice for this application

Above a Fireplace
Sconces are a great way to upgrade a mantel. Placement depends on what’s above it. If there’s no art, install sconces 60-66 inches from the floor and 6-12 inches from the edge of the mantel, ensuring they’re evenly spaced from the fireplace centerline.
If artwork hangs above, align the sconces with the center of the art rather than the mantel. Place them about midway along the artwork’s height and 5-10 inches from either side, depending on its size. This frames the art beautifully and draws the eye to the focal point. Always measure carefully for balance and symmetry.

Hallway Spacing and Mounting Height
Lining a hallway with sconces adds both beauty and functionality, creating a rhythmic glow that guides the eye and gently lights the path. Install sconces every 8 to 10 feet for even illumination, avoiding dark spots without crowding the walls. Mount each sconce 60 to 66 inches from the floor to keep the light at eye level.
This approach also works well in entryways, setting the tone for your home from the moment someone walks in.
